What to Bring

It is essential that you bring a torch, shoes you don’t mind getting wet – and we mean fully immersed in water: ideally, wet shoes, sandals or old runners, broad-brimmed hat with sun visor for all round protection, sunscreen, swimming costume and towel, good walking/trekking shoes and a personal water bottle.

If you have chosen the Camping option, you will also need to bring a Sleeping Bag. These are available for hire at $45pp – these must be requested with our office at least 15 days prior to travel. Sleeping Bags are included on the Camping Plus option.

Other recommendations include: warm clothes for the evening (particularly if travelling May-Aug), personal toiletries and first aid, with any personal medication required.

Notes

• Your tour will be operated by our partners, Intrepid Travel, and is therefore subject to Intrepid Travel’s Booking Conditions.
• Departures are subject to weather conditions and road closures: usually only a concern for tours in April/October.
• Minimum age on this trip is 12yo.
• Accommodation upgrades are subject to availability.
• Due to capacity constraints in the Private Camps, including the Bungle Bungles Safari Camp, single travellers may have to twinshare with another traveller of the same gender – this is a rare occurrence. If you are camping, a single tent is provided.
• Dinner on Night 4 is not included as the Fitzroy River Lodge has a great restaurant – allow approx AUD $50pp for a meal. (Allow a little more if you want a beer or glass of wine.)
• This itinerary involves some clambering over rocks, wading in water by torchlight, walking on rocky creek beds and ascending/descending into gorges. A reasonable level of fitness and being sure on your feet is necessary to participate. Refer to the Fitness rating in The Facts.
• The optional Single Supplement on Camping Plus (5DBB1) does not include the Bungle Bungles stay; due to capacity constraints single travellers may have to twinshare with another traveller of the same gender – this is a rare occurrence.
• It is important that you appreciate the outback experience and the remote, vast nature of the areas through which we travel – please ensure you read our What You Need to Know and Frequently Asked Questions pages.
• Expect some early morning starts! It is nicer to walk in the cooler morning and travel in the vehicle during the heat of the day.
• Travel Insurance is compulsory for all travellers on all tours and details must be presented to tour guide before departure.

Special Note about Tunnel Creek

The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions refers to the Subterranean Trail through Tunnel Creek as a ‘Class 4 Trail – these are trails that are “in relatively undisturbed environments and are often rough with few, if any, modifications. A moderate to high level of fitness is required. You need to be prepared and self-reliant.”

Dimalurru (Tunnel Creek) National Park

Tunnel View Trail – (Class 2 – 400m return. 30 minutes) Take an easy stroll to the tunnel entrance to observe the patterns, textures, and colours in the limestone at the rock face.

Subterranean Trail – (Class 4 – 2km return. 1.5 hours) The adventurous can scramble over the rocks to take a sometimes chilly and occasionally deep wade through several permanent pools within the tunnel to the other side of the Napier Range. A torch and shoes are required to avoid hazards overhead and underfoot. Near the centre of the cave the roof has collapsed and is an excellent place to observe the colony of flying foxes that roost in the trees during the day.
